Krampus is a mythical creature. In various regions of the world – especially in Austria and Hungary– it is believed that Krampus accompanies St. Nicholas during the Christmas season.
The word Krampus originates from the Old High German word for claw (Krampen).
What is KRAMPUS doing?
He is warning and punishing bad children, in contrast to St. Nicholas, who gives gifts to good children!
He looks like the devil!
Traditionally, young men dress up as the Krampus in the first two weeks of December.
Particularly on the evening of 5.th, 6th December they roam the streets frightening children and women!
They use rusty chains, bells and - birch rods - for punishment!
In alpine areas there are similar scary figures like the Krampus - the Schiachperchten.
They do not accompany St Nicholas!
These characters scare people in processions during Dec. 24th and Jan 6th.
St. Nicholas and some Krampusses will visit our school on Dec. ???????
